Chain & Chain Tensioners

We sell a large variety of replacement or extra chain for your operator. Much like wire, chain uses a numerical guage rating to determine sizing rather than giving you a physical measurement. The most commonly used size is #40, with #41 being used on some lighter duty gate operators. Chain sizes #50 and #60 are usually used on much heavier duty operators for industrial applications. The odd sizes such as #25 and #48 are not used as chain for the gate, but are typically replacement drive chain between the motor and gear box on the gate operator itself. Chain is available in three finishes of increasing quality, black (regular), nickel plated, and stainless steel. The black chain rusts the easiest and will need to be greased more often. Nickel plated is a little more expensive and will not rust as easy as the black chain because of the special coating. The most expensive chain is stainless, but it will also last the longest and have to be adjusted and greased less often. Multiple sections can be combined using master links, and chain can be cut down using a chain break, or an angle grinder and afterwards a punch to drive out the pin.

The Tension on the Chain can be Adjusted using Chain Tension Bolts. This is a bolt with two nuts and an eye in the head to allow attachment of the chain. The bolt is mounted through the chain mounting bracket with a nut on either side of the bracket. Make sure that you do not overtighten the chain as this will cause excess wear on the sprocket and idler wheels inside of the gate operator itself. There should be about 2" of sag for every 12' of length. Over time the chain will stretch and you will need to adjust the tension tighter. When you can no longer achieve enough tension, you will need to cut off a few links from the chain and reattach to the bolts. Eventually the whole chain will need to be replaced. You should also keep your chain lubricated 1 to 2 times a year, usually before and after the winter time. The is easily done with a spray on lubricant or a rag with a can of grease. Make sure to remove any excess grease if you use the rag method.
